Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES)/Auxiliary Communications (AUXCOMM)

The Johnson County ARES/AUXCOMM group is open to all licensed Amateur Radio operators.  You do not have to be an ARRL member to join.

We have a weekly training radio net every Thursday at 6:30 pm on the K5OO 147.045 (no tone) repeater located north of Clarksville, AR.  All Amateur Radio operators are invited to check-in.

  • NASAR Introduction to Search and Rescue (ISAR) Course – March 1-March 2, 2025
    Host:  Johnson County DEM Search and Rescue

    Location: Johnson County EOC Conference Room in the basement of the Johnson County Courthouse at 215 W. Main St, Clarksville, AR
    - The field portion on Sunday will be announced at the class.

    Saturday, March 1, 2025

    Costs:
    - Johnson County Responders: No Charge (Must still register)
    - ISAR Course: $40/student

    Course Materials:
    - The NASAR Introduction to Search and Rescue book is the textbook for this course.
    - You may order it from the NASAR Bookstore or from Amazon.
    - The Instructor may have a limited number of these books available for purchase at $35 per book. If you would like to purchase one please select that option on the registration page.
    - The Johnson County Dept of Emergency Management has a limited number of these book available for loan to Johnson County responders.

    This 16-20 hour course can count towards 8 hours of certified training for Act 833 for Arkansas Firefighters.

    Optional NASAR SARTech III Certification Exam:
    The NASAR SARTech III Non-Wilderness Responder is an operations level non-wilderness responder certification that is good for 3 years.   • NWS Basic SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training – March 3, 2025

    This class will be conducted by the National Weather Service Little Rock office. More information can be found at

    This class counts towards 2 hrs of certified training for Act 833.

    This class is open to the public and all emergency responders.

  • NASAR Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR) Course – August 24-October 20, 2024

    WHAT: 

    Johnson County DEM Search and Rescue is hosting a National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR) Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR) course in Johnson County starting on Saturday, August 24.  The FUNSAR course helps prepare you to conduct search and rescue operations in a wilderness environment.  The FUNSAR course is a required educational component for the SARTECH II certification.  This is a roughly 40 hour course.  The first half of the course will take place in a classroom setting and the second half will take place in a field setting.  The course will include an overnight mock search on the final weekend in which students will be expected to sleep in the field in improvised shelters.  Students will be expected to have the proper equipment available for use during the field portions of the course.  Needed equipment will be discussed during the classroom portion of the course.

    WHEN: 

    • Saturday, August 24 9:00 am to ~6:30 pm
    • Saturday, September 7 9:00 am to ~6:30 pm
    • Saturday, September 21 9:00 am to ~6:30 pm
    • Saturday, September 28 09:00 am to ~12:00 pm (this date/time may need to be modified)
    • Saturday, October 5 4:00 pm to ~9:30 pm (this date/time may need to be modified)
    • Saturday, October 19 9:00 am to Sunday, October 20 ~8:00 am (Overnight)

    WHERE: 

    The classroom portion of the course will take place in the Johnson County EOC Conference Room in basement of the Johnson County Courthouse.  The address for the Courthouse is:

    The field parts of the course will be conducted at various locations in Johnson County. Directions will be given during the course.

    • Johnson County Responders: No Charge (Must still register)
    • FUNSAR Course & SARTech II Certification Evaluation bundle with a FUNSAR Book provided: $160 per student
    • FUNSAR Course & SARTech II Certification Evaluation bundle – Student provides their own FUNSAR Book: $100 per student
    • FUNSAR Course Only with a FUNSAR Book provided:  $120 per student
    • FUNSAR Course Only – Student provides their own FUNSAR Book:  $60 per student

    ADDITIONAL INFO:

    • Deadline to register is August 16
    • 20 spots available.  Preference will be given to Johnson County responders.
    • Arkansas Fire Fighters are eligible to receive 8 hours of Act 833 Certified Training credits.
    • ALETA/CLEST may award Arkansas LEOs continuing education credits.
